All Grown Up

I’m going back to that holy ground
To take a stroll through the museum of my lifetime
I’ll try not to trespass on my memories
I never dreamed that change could alter what we once were

Well, I’ve learned a lesson
There’s nothing constant in this life, nothing constant
Friends they grow up, turn into other people
Look at you now, you’re all grown up now

I’ve been alive about twelve thousand days
And slept almost as many dream encumbered nighttimes
When my mind steps up to contemplate
Eternity my trials they drift away like nothing

Well, I’ve learned a lesson
There’s nothing constant in this life, nothing constant
Friends they grow up, turn into other people
Look at you now, you’re all grown up now
You are all grown up now
You are all grown up now
You are all grown up now, all grown up…

I’m going back to that holy ground
To take a stroll through the museum of my younger days
I’ll try not to trespass on my memories
I never dreamed that change could alter what we used to be

Well, I’ve learned a lesson…

Black Fish

Black fish sailing away
Can’t seem to reel it in, out on the open sea
Black market turnaround
Can’t seem to get it right
All that you’ve ever seen

Cast a line out in the sea
Through the waves you roll along
You taught yourself what to believe
You built your life upon that wall
Cast a line out in your mind
Heaven knows just what you’ll find
When that form breaks from the deep
You question all that you believe

Black Water

Is this plane gonna fly?
‘Cause I’ve been waiting for a lifetime, baby
Is this water gonna flow
“Cause I’ve been waiting just to dip my lips in the well
When you see what you’ve got
You know that it is coming
You only think about yourself
You’ve been drinking black water

Is this water gonna flow
It seems like years since I’ve been waiting on the sun to rise
Living through the darkest hour
for at least a thousand days
When you see what you’ve got
You know that it is coming
You only think about yourself
You’ve been drinking black water

Black water, through your life a thousand days
Black water, one more sip you’re gonna die
Black water, you’d sell your soul to see the light

Is this plane gonna fly?
‘Cause I’ve been waiting for a lifetime, baby
Is this water gonna flow
“Cause I’ve been waiting just to dip my lips in the well
When you see what you’ve got
You know that it is coming
You only think about yourself
You’ve been drinking black water

Black water, through your life a thousand days
Black water, one more sip you’re gonna die
Black water, you’d sell your soul to see the light

Blissful Ignorance

Every time you call me up again
This old wall that I had to build up between us
Starts to crumble down again

I wanna hear those lies again
Float along in my blissful ignorance
Never knowing what is next

Well cancel the show tonight, here’s why
‘cause it’s time for us to say goodbye

Get yourself into some kind of new thing
Walk upon that razor’s edge of life
And take this with as many grains of salt you need
But always listen to yourself

Well cancel the show tonight, here’s why
‘cause it’s time for us to say goodbye
There’s no need to sing another song
‘cause you know the harmony is gone

Every time you call me up again
This old wall that I had to build up between us
Starts to crumble down again

Broken Glass

I’ve had this watch for fifteen long years
A silent victim of broken gears
I never dreamed it’d turn out this way
I saw my life through a broken glass

Through this wall, I will sing
And through this life, I will rise
In my own way

Liberation comes to the one
Who learns to love, not regret, what’s done
So let yourself be carried away
Let tomorrow become today

Through this wall, I will sing
And through this life, I will rise
In my own way

And every day I’ll do what I feel
Every day I’ll feel what to do
Sing some songs, invest myself in you
And every day I’ll do what I know
Every day I’ll know what to do
Song some songs invest myself in you babe

I’ve had this watch for fifteen long years
Now a victim of broken gears
I never dreamed it’d turn out this way
I saw my life through a broken glass

Candlelight Parade

Guess, guess what I was dreaming of last night
I was picturing a candlelight parade around the world
Ad you, of all the people in the whole wide world
You were the first to take your candle out and sail across the sea

Speak, let your voice call out across the sea
I want to hear you tell me everything
I’ve missed through all the years
And we, I still believe that if the stars line up
A day will come when we will join our hands and sail around the world

It’s been a long time since I laid my burden down
It’s been a long time since we sailed beneath the stars
And let our minds get lost within that sea of lights

Well guess, guess what I was dreaming of last night
I was picturing a candlelight parade around the world
Ad you, of all the people in the whole wide world
You were the first to take your candle out and sail across the sea

Curtain Fall

Lights around the room
Lights upon your face
The room is bathed in the lights
You strike a final chord
As the candles flicker out
The room dissolves into lights

But did you see that curtain fall?
Did you watch his spirit fall to pieces in the lights?

Lights upon the stage
Lights inside your eyes
The stage is bathed in the lights
You bells all chime the hour
We listen one last time and watch with one final look

But did you see that curtain fall?
Did you watch his spirit fall to pieces in the lights?

You really can’t complain
when you realise that your dreams ain’t what you want after all
The visions in your mind and the forms they find
must be their own reward from now on

But did you see that curtain fall?
Did you watch his spirit rise from ashes in the lights?

Ding Dong

Ding dong, the witch is dead
It’s been half my life, but she’s outta my head
And my thoughts are free to roam,
But I don’t know where

Knock knock, who’s there?
Jump out of bed, you go to the window,
But nobody nobody nobody’s there
And you say you want a reason,
say you want a reason

Fee fie, Foe fum, I smell the scent of her old perfume
And my thoughts are free to roam without bitterness

Tick tock, stare at the clock
It only smiles where it used to mock
Well, you can’t undo the things you’ve already done
And you say you want a reason,
say you want a reason

No I can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout you
I remember what it’s like
No I can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout you
I remember what it’s like
Oh when I can’t see beyond tomorrow
Just today dear, it’s all I know

Ding dong, the witch is dead
It’s been half my life, but she’s outta my head
And my thoughts are free to roam,
But I don’t know where

Knock knock, who’s there?
Jump out of bed, you go to the window,
But nobody nobody nobody’s there
And you say you want a reason,
say you want a reason

Everybody Gather Around

Everybody gather around
We’re gonna dance, we’re gonna party down
You can wear your hair in your face, wander from place to place
Why are you alone tonight darlin’?
I really wanna watch you dancing in the open air

Everybody gather around
We’re gonna sing, we’re gonna party down
If you can get up high like Marvin Gaye,
Or float along like Billie Holiday
Why are you alone tonight darlin’?
There’s such a fine feeling flowing through the air

You can’t sleep, you’ve got some kinda thing
You can’t sleep, you’ve got some kinda thing
You can’t sleep, you’re rolling around your bed
You might as well be here

Everybody gather around
We’re gonna drink, we’re gonna party down
You can see tem stars in the sky
Gonna light it up and get real high
Why are you alone tonight darlin’?
I really wanna watch you dancing in the open air

Evil in Your Eye

Evil in your eye, she’s had it coming like a long black cloud
There ain’t no stopping till you’ve got her down, you’ve let her know
She’s never gonna get you back
Evil in your eye, I know, I know
Evil in your eye, you swear to God
There ain’t no stopping till you’ve played your cards, you’ve had your fill
Of making up for all the wrong she’s done you

We’ve gone on far too long to end up like this
I know you’ve reasoned yourself out of feeling true to someone
You need no reason, try to hold
Nobody’s ever held you back, you can’t lose

But there’s evil in your eye…

Down in the depths of your sometimes vision,
You realize that noone’s really guilty
For their sins, it’s all just chance
We’re thrust into our circumstance
The line between the good and bad, it’s not real

You’ve got no other way to feel, even though you’ve tried
You know no other way to love
It’s like a part of you have died
It’s like you’re made of stone and fire
Your will is burned up now
It’s fate that drives your hand

But there’s evil in your eye…

Hold the Line

Don’t wanna be a big shot
I’m satisfied eating humble pie,
but I’d rather bake it for myself than get it from some other hand
Well, hold the line my sweet Melinda
Hold the line my soldier love
I wanna swim with you in the moonshine
I wanna dance with you again, my dear
Oh, again my dear

I’m gonna go until my voice runs out
Made up my mind, there’s no turning back,
and if the stars all line up right we’ll throw the rule book out the door
Well, hold the line my sweet Melinda…

Don’t crave no place within the spotlight
Just wanna be the master of my time,
and if the stars all line up right we’ll set our sails and roll along
Well, hold the line my sweet Melinda
Hold the line my soldier love
I wanna swim with you in the moonshine
I wanna ride with you in the daytime
I wanna fly with you in the sunlight
I wanna dance with you again, my dear
Oh, again my dear

I Miss Those Times so Much

Isn’t it a shame that time only moves in one direction
God, you really screwed up on that one
You could argue that it’s just a limitation of human perception
But I’ll only ever be human
And I miss those times so much

I wonder if my friends still think about it as much as I do
Or if I’m just especially nostalgic
But I’d love to write a book about all those places I remember
I often stop and think about them
And I miss those times so much

We really had some times we had some good times and some bad times
Just like fucking Led Zeppelin
Well, my woman left home for a brownj-eyed man
But I sure don’t seem to care

In the Black Space

In the black space behind her heart
Lie the ruins of a dream she once sought,
And now that dream is gone

She don’t whisper or sing a word about that
You just divined it from the way she acts
You’d better know, if you’re gonna try to go back there
you’d better be on your guard

(Bridge)
Well it’s not easy in the year 2009
To break through to the other side
Yeah, ‘cause everybody’s short on time
I’m telling you, they’ve gotta go

For all the means of communication we’ve invented
They’re incredibly easy times to be lonely, well
I can tell you a thousand stories, ten thousand stories ‘bout that

Repeat (Bridge)

In the black space behind her heart
Lie the ruins of a dream she once sought
And now that dream is gone

Long Way to Home and Back

You’ve got your new life in a new land
New friends, new thoughts, new feelings
New places to spend your little piece of the pie
But it’s your old life that fills your mind
Old friends, old thoughts, old feelings
Old places you spent the golden days of your life

Well it’s a long way to home and back
The ticket’s in my hand
I’m surely gonna go one way
but I don’t know if I’m coming back
No I don’t know if I’m coming back

Get your shoes on and take a walk
Have a look at all the world around you
It should be building you up,
But it’s been breaking you down
Somewhere out there, there’s a key
All you’ve got to do is look, you’ll it
Instead of locking things up
It’s gonna set them al free

Well it’s a long way to home and back…

You’ve got everything a simple man should need to fill his heart
Good love, a nice place to live…

Well it’s a long way to peace untold
Been trying to find that train
I know that when I catch that ride
I’ll find the same life at the end of the line
I’ll find the same life at the end of the line

You’ve got your new life in a new land
New friends, new thoughts, new feelings
New places to spend your little piece of the pie
New places to walk and read a book in the park
New places to drink on a Saturday night
New places to make a little love on the beach
New places to dream about being a star

Maura’s Tune

Well, I don’t need to say you’re beautiful
That’s pretty goddamned obvious to anyone who looks
I just think you might need to be reminded sometimes
You can’t believe everything you read in books

You always complain I never wrote a song for you in really direct language
Well, here it goes, I hope you like it
You came and robbed me from the life I always saw myself living
Well, I ain’t complaining, I just want you to recognize what I’ve done
Just to be with you I picked up my whole life and moved across the water
It’s very fashionable to refer to it as a pond, but it’s really a big fuckin’ ocean

Well, I don’t need to say you’re cool as hell
That’s pretty goddamned obvious to anyone who talks to you
I just think you might need to be reminded sometimes
I’ve got a dozen different lives going on in my head all at once

It was never my intention to sit down and write a list of my favorite things about you,
but here’s just one… I never met anyone I could trust so much, I really trust you
You just might be the only person I’ve ever loved in my whole life
That didn’t disappoint me at least one time
‘Cause I saw it all from the start, and I took the good with the bad
And I don’t need to say you’re beautiful
That’s pretty goddamned obvious to anyone who looks
I just think you might need to be reminded sometimes
You can’t believe everything you read in books

Well, I might have some dreams sometimes
about the other lives I always saw myself living,
but I can’t help it, no, I can’t help it, I can’t, I can’t…

My Mind is Wandering

I saw you creeped into my back door
Didn’t even try to clean your tracks
Can’t help but feel bad
Such a breach of faith
But I won’t get you back

I saw your graffiti on my bedroom wall
Saw your belief in something more
Can’t help but feel that
There’s a better way to make you feelings known

And as the sunlight creeps up all the birds are in tune
Been waiting years to hear them sing
My mind is wandering, my mind is wandering

My friends all say that you’ve been putting me down
Badmouthing right behind my back
Nobody taught you, such a useless game
It ain’t no way to act

You lit a fire on my garden wall
Put little rocks inside my shoes
Well sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can’t win me back

And as the sunlight creeps up all the birds are in tune…

Through the open door of the peace that fills my life
And I’m gonna take you by the hand
And I’m gonna walk down to the sea
And I’m gonna ride the big black ship
Where my mind is wandering, my mind is wandering

I saw you creeped into my back door
Didn’t even try to clean your tracks
Can’t help but feel bad
Such a breach of faith, but I won’t get you back

And as the sunlight creeps up all the birds are in tune…

And as the moonlight creeps up
All the bells break the night
Been waiting years to hear them ring
My mind is wandering, my mind is wandering

Never Gonna Go Back Home

Grab your bags and turn the lights out
Get your boots on, that train ain’t waiting on you
Your little gold-digger ain’t gonna find you now,
Ain’t gonna find you now

(Chorus)
Went and found a new life, cast aside your old strife
You’re never gonna go back home
Left behind your old friends, you’re looking through a new lens
You’re never gonna go back home

That engine rolls, you’re finally on your way
Conductor comes, you give him your ticket
Out the window now, the trees roll by,
You never feel so high

(Chorus)

(Bridge)
All the times you thought you knew yourself
You realized that you were someone else
And all those other lives you almost lead
They’re gonna be waiting on you

Went and found a new life, cast aside your old strife
You’re never gonna go back home

Another year goes by, another lifetime,
Another afternoon upon the rail lines
You can’t abide by noone’s law
Nobody’s laws but yours

(Chorus)

(Bridge)

Went and found a new life, cast aside your old strife
You’re never gonna go back home

Nobody’s Fool

The city shimmers into darkness as the sunlight fades around us
The evening rises, and the murmur on the street is like a sweet song
Let’s have a drink, we’ll take it in, we’ll get a table with a candle
It feels so right sometimes to say we’re gonna stay here for a long time

Well that’s the life we want, we said
Been changing lives to long
Oh, lord, but sometimes…
Let’s but some tickets, burn our bridges, cut our ties and move along
Let’s get a map, we’ll make a plan, we’ll clean the slate and bid farewell
I know we’re older, and we said the time had come to lay some roots down
Well, I ain’t nobody’s fool, I just act like it sometimes, I act like it sometimes

We’ve put our pennies in the bank, the time has come to get our own place
We’ll make a list of all the things we need and all that we can live without
We’ve got a neighborhood in mind, just gotta wait and find the right one
Where you can put some flowers in a vase
I’ll play you all my little love songs

Well that’s the life we want, we said…

It’s hard to know just what you want
It’s hard to know just what you want
It’s like I need some kind of anti-domestic lobotomy
It’s hard to know just what you want, like there’s something growing up inside
It’s hard to know just what you want, oh just what you want

Ring on Her Finger

Everybody seems to want to take you for a ride
It’s just that kind of year
And everybody seems to know just what you’re gonna say
Before you even open your mouth

You think it might be time
You’ve been sitting on a gold mine
Walking in your way, you’ve been waiting just to feel right
Wondering how it’d be, if she’d only put that ring on her finger

All along you spoke the truth, you never learned control
You’ve got a big mouth, baby
You tried to learn to shut your trap, you tried to learn to keep
Some of your secrets all to yourself

You think it might be time
You’ve been sitting on a gold mine
Walking in your way, you’ve been waiting just to feel right
Wondering how it’d be, if she’d only put that ring on her finger

Shadows

Shadows gonna get you now
You’ve spent everything you’ve got this time
Got no bridges left, you’ve burned them all
Ain’t holding nothing back, I can see it deep inside
You’ve got no plan left in your head

It all happens in one day
You go from feeling like that to feeling like this, it’s wrong
It all happens in your mind
Everybody knows what it’s like to go from feeling like that to feeling like…
You’ve got to ride it when it’s here, yeah

Shadows gonna get you now…

Spend your life doing what they want
It’s time to break out on your own, start living in real time
You’ve got nothing left to give
It’s time to break out by yourself, stop living like a man child
You’ve got to ride it when it’s here

I guess it all comes down to feeling like a puppet on a string
I guess it all comes down to pulling off the veil of pride that traps you in

Shadows gonna get you now…

She Stepped Out on a Ledge

She stepped out on the ledge
She stepped out on the ledge
She had a moment of inspiration
But decided to go for it anyway
She decided to go for it anyway

A song came on the radio
Right as she took that fatal step
A song came on the the radio
As she was dropping through the air
And in that space she saw herself
In that space she saw a thousand years

She stepped out on the ledge
She stepped out on the ledge
She rose upon the rains
She rose upon the rains

A song came on the radio
Right as she took that fatal step
A song came on the the radio
As she was dropping through the air
And in that space she saw herself
In that space she saw a thousand years

Siren’s Song

Siren won’t you sing me one more song
I’m tied down to the mast
Just let your voice ring out upon that open air so I can hear
And I will sail until that island’s far behind me
But I will keep that melody locked in my mind,
‘cause it’s a long, long way

Nowadays it’s tough not to get lost
We’re floating through a dream
But listen for those melodies that lurk within the fog
And if you dance until that trance is finally broken
You can keep that melody locked in your mind,
‘cause it’s a long, long way

Stationary Life

You stand before that open doorway
That door could carry you away, carry you away
It’s not the first time that you’ve been here
But every time you turn away, turn your head away

Get your hat on and your sunglasses
If you wanna get a move on, you’ve just got to get it on
Stop telling yourself that it’s time to get out of this stationary life, stationary life

A voice from deep inside you calls out
It says it might not be the way, night not be the way
That subtle voice seems so familiar
The thousand lips that turn away, lips that turn away

Get your hat on and your sunglasses…

You stand before that open doorway
That door could carry you away, carry you away

Get your hat on and your sunglasses…

Sunday Morning

Sunday morning, rise when the day is dawning
Seven churchbells ring through my open windows

Can’t stop, it feels right
Can’t but you know you want to
One time is too much
Oh, my heart is overflowing

Trees Along the Riverside

A friend of mine he’s trying to learn how to hypnotize people
He’d lay you on your back right now and have a look inside your mind
and try to banish all the bad kind

When I was younger I probably would’ve let him
My mind was free and my heart was unfettered,
floating through the world, like some kind of eternal summer

The trees along the riverside they’re sagging underneath the weight of that snowfall
I’ve watched at least a dozen fall, they’re going downstream, downstream
I wish it wasn’t so

Tonight I feel the need for some Buddhist meditation
I should probably just Google “buddhist meditation”
And give somebody my bank account
To teach me how to chill out

You can only go around and round inside yourself so many times
You can only go around and round inside yourself so many times
You can only go around and round inside yourself so many times
It’s a game
It makes you feel so fucking lame

The trees along the riverside they’re sagging underneath the weight of that snowfall
I’ve watched at least a dozen fall, they’re going downstream, downstream
I wish it wasn’t so

Maybe in the morning I should go and catch a train,
sit by the window and try to get away from this state of mind
and go back home, go back home

You can only go around and round inside yourself so many times
You can only go around and round inside yourself so many times…

Turkish Interlude

In the garden light I saw it in your smile
You threw that dream out there
You’re never gonna see that dream again
In the station light I saw it in your eyes
It rose from deep within, a vision of your trials yet to come

That’s just a reason, but that ain’t no reason
Just a Turkish interlude, not life

In your youthful eyes of passion fresh like snow
I can see no lies, a place where no deception has been known
And in my modest book of ageing tragedy
A hidden page remains, never touched by blood, nor ink nor rain

That’s just a reason, but that ain’t no reason
Just a Turkish interlude, not life

In the garden light I saw it in your smile
You threw that dream out there
You’re never gonna see that dream again

You’d Give It All

You’ve got it bad, you’re working overtime
Look around and you see your reflection in the glass
On the wall that’s keeping you apart
From the life on the outside, life on the outside

Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all
Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all

You’re just a long shot, but you ain’t counting cards
You put your fingers to your lips, your thoughts cut down right to the bone
And the life you’re living in your mind
Seems so far off in the distance, but you can taste it

Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all
Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all
Everything you’ve ever wanted to be
Like a pocket full of posies, they all fall down
Have yourself another drink, ‘cause life’s a gas
Tell yourself another lie, let’s have a blast

You took a ride on a flaming carousel
You never knew it wrapped around
You though it’d fly you to the moon
And looking down at the earth from the clouds
It would seem so familiar, so damned familiar

Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all
Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all
Everything you’ve ever wanted to be
Like a pocket full of posies, they all fall down
Have yourself another drink, ‘cause life’s a gas
Tell yourself another lie, let’s have a blast

You’ve got it bad, you’re working overtime
Look around and you see your reflection in the glass
On the wall that’s keeping you apart
From the life on the outside, life on the outside

Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all
Everything you’ve ever owned, you’d give it all
