All of the songs on Tell It Like It Is were composed between August 2022 and February 2023. I continued working on them, adding and rewriting lyrics, up until the recording sessions began that following summer, but the melodies, chords and basic structures were all drafted within that seven-month window. Even though the pandemic had been going on for over two years by the time I started writing these songs, the shock and psychological impact of that unique experience still felt fresh, and the associated themes of politics, media, human connection and nostalgia for more innocent times were continually present in my mind.
The recordings captured here were made in July 2023 at Medusa Estudio in Barcelona. The realization of this album wouldn’t have been possible without the enthusiasm, artistry and taste of Miki Grau. I’m also deeply grateful to the other musicians and engineers who contributed their skills and ingenuity to help bring these creations to fruition.
In spite of its name, my third full album, Born to Be Alone, was actually the result of a collaboration. From 2014 to 2018 I studied piano under the tutelage of Barcelona-based composer José Carrasco. Our piano lessons gradually turned into a collaboration, with me on guitar and José adding his sensitive lush arrangements. After playing a series of concerts together, some in duo format and some with a backing band, we decided to go into the studio to record the repertoire we had developed. It was through José that I met drummer and producer Miki Grau, who took over production of the album in its final stages and ended up having a tremendous impact on the project. The artwork and packaging for Born to Be Alone consists of three original collages by Catalán artist and designer Carles Piera, who, among many accomplishments, has designed and constructed the main stage of the Cruilla Music Festival for the past four years.
My second album, All Grown Up, was released on Halloween of 2011 under my band’s name (The David Cevoli Band), and we launched it with a very memorable show at a classic Barcelona venue, The Harlem Jazz Club. This album captures a very special period in my life and in my musical journey: my early days in Barcelona, settling down after many years of youthful travels, forming my first live band, playing regular concerts in and around the city, and forming lifelong friendships with my bandmates. The album was recorded and produced by Scottish expat Simon Smith of BcnSound, who has gone on to write and produce the musical scores for many award-winning Spanish films.
This is my first album, which features many popular favorites from my early days of playing around the bars and clubs of Barcelona, Spain from 2009 to 2012 with The David Cevoli Band, including “She Stepped Out on the Ledge”, “Shadows” and the title track, “In the Black Space”. It was recorded in London in the spring of 2009 in the studio of my friend Thurman Bryan, but it wasn’t released until 2011.
